End of last year, my T-28 Blazer attempted to commit suicide. I had a phone call from my local boatyard saying she was sitting a little low and would they like me to take a look. Well, the upshot was that there was 2' of water sloshing about inside and I'd lost my batteries, half my electrics, most of the stuff which was stored low down, the gearbox etc. etc. etc. I'd visited the boat 2 weeks before and she'd been fine - she used to "leak" a maximum of 1/2 gallon every month (a lot of it was fresh/rain water) but nothing too excessive until now.

Anyway, she's out the water now, dried out, rewired, new batteries, replaced gearbox etc. etc. and almost ready to relaunch. I have piles of stuff drying out in the greenhouse waiting for the summer !

Now this may sound silly, but I still have no idea how the water got in, I've checked and rebuild/reground/regreased all of the sea cocks. The stern gland is fine, the hull is undamaged, all the through hull fittings look fine. I adopted the policy of removing/checking and rebedding all of the hull fittings so I hope I have resolved the concern. I guess I'll find out when she's relaunched !

Anyway, back to the reason for the message, after my Autohelm ST-1000 died on leaving Cherbourg after the Trapper rally there a couple of years ago, I swore I would carry a spare a/p in future (21 hours helming was enough for me ...).

I picked up an old style version-1 AH2000 (with the big seperate "mechanical" compass/control unit). It was stored on the boat wrapped in a polythene bag until the "sinking". Well, total immersion did it no good, after hours on the bench trying to get it going again, it keeps blowing drive transistors so I guess the control unit is duff. The ram seems fine but the control electronics are stuffed.

I've just noticed a later model AH2000 control unit on the internet (EBAY), no ram just the control unit. It's the Version 2 model, the one with a seperate control unit (with buttons on it like the old AH1000) and with the power input and 3 other connectors on the bottom. Has anyone ever had one of these and/or know if, together with a ram (the only bit I have that still works), this makes up a complete AH2000, or is there a seperate compass unit needed as well ?

Thanks for your help,

Best Regards, Brian ("Blazer" 1970 T-28)
