My 500 lost it's mast a few years ago, in the yard they didn;t chock it properly, so I had to have a new mast and rigging. I insisted that they fit the old Proctor roller reefing boom as for a family crew that doesn't race and is happy to be a bit slower on passage it's so easy. The main thing you need to make life easy and keep your kicking strap is a good old fashioned Reefing Claw.

You set this the right distance down the boom to give the correct angle on the kicking strap and the attach a line between where the main sheet attaches to the boom end and the bottom of the claw where the kicking strap attaches. Just slack off the kicking strap, take the weight off the boom with the topping lift and it rolls up or down a treat. I must admit my main is cut with parrel battens and a luff rope.

The wife and I have been using this reefing for 20 years and wouldn't change it, it's just so easy.
