curiouser and curiouser! Ive just looked at your pic and im damned if I can see how that would work, on Beachcomber yes ok but on Sula, Never in a million years.

I was sailing in the Baie du Seinne and someone else was on watch ..I accidentally switched the autohelm off ..about a minute or so later there was a terrific crash as the boom came over in a huge gybe! we'd done a 180 and the watchkeeper hadnt even noticed! so NOTHING keeps Sula from gripeing up except continious control. Ive tried all conditions and all points of sailing even broad reaching but she always turns to windward while she accelerates.

Thankfully I dont have any problems with an autohelm 1000, that handles things in all conditions Ive encountered (even a force 8 off Sylt) and no problems with battery drain

a few weeks ago we had some odd weather, windspeed varied from 9 to 31 knots! I was on passage Sunderland to Hartlepool, it was either stooging along at 4k or so (reefed main and full genny) ..or frantically reducing the headsail at 7k while on our ear in a tight turn to windward!...finally said B*****r it and just used the 4 rolls in the main and a little less than working jib, still got 6.5 k at times, but much better balanced.

I know all about rip off britain but up here is something differant! what about a chandlers that wont let you in ?thats Storrers in Newcastle you have to ring the front door bell before they open the door ! Hartlepool Marina when asked about scrubbing posts ..."no it would reduce the revenue on our hoist".... hmm yes Im going to pay £204 to scrub the bottom arent I! thats why I use Sunderlands half tide shelf! its the only one for MILES, and the beasties that grow on the bottom! Ive been told that they are shelless mussels, and theres THOUSANDS of them !"

Seaham Harbour: £900 a year for an insecure swinging mooring? Hartlepool: £340 a year harbour dues? (8 bouys and thats your lot! the pontoon is extra and you maintain it yourself!)(Chichester doesnt even come close!) and Cowes is cheaper than most of the places up here if you stay out of the marina!

I know about Holland ..Sixhaven was £7 a night last time I was there. and I left Sula in Stavanger overwinter and only paid £180 for a full years mooring!

I think Staithes has been altered since you where here. it seems to have an extra wall from old pictures Ive seen and looks pretty secure to me, for summer use that is, and there is plenty of wall to lie against to dry out

didnt have any probs getting a danforth to bite at Lindisfarne. in fact it bit too well! wind was 5/6 overnight and the anchor came up with one fluke badly bent, so that was a new anchor needed!

and the weather helm? could it be down to the sails? but I seem to remember that she had some weather helm with the old sails!..........BUT she was badly set up. 2 riggers still didnt get it right! so it could be the way I have set her up! I remember that before I changed things I managed to stall the keel and the rudder one night beating down the Solent on port tack (thats helm hard a lee and no reaction at 4 knots indicated)

ho hum whos in charge of equality round here?
