Sorry John, I misinterpreted your message to mean that you had some fine-tuning buttons to introduce more or less damping on the reaction. No way would the bearing +/- degrees buttons help my situation; the ship is correctly maintaining the course then starts to veer off-course (a wave bursts against the bow, the wind increases or slackens), the Autohelm applies a change of tiller but it cannot keep pace with the change, which continues to increment more than the correction - "too little, too late".

After a monumental rummage in the celler I have the manual. The following extract may be pertinent: "When a sudden change in trim occurs the automatic trim compensation system requires approximately 20 seconds to apply the necessary rudder off-set to restore the automatic heading." No way is 20 seconds correction inactivity going to help me - Beachcomber could have executed a couple of 360 degree pirouettes in that time.

No, my model is without the digital readout, which leads me to think it is a really early model, even supersceded when I got it (perhaps why Autohelm gave it to me) and that improvements to the correction algorithms may be worth getting a new unit for. Having been a software engineer myself a lifetime ago, I know the value of having the ability to apply firmware upgrades as these things are always being improved on. Perhaps if I return it they might be able to install a later version chip.

Best,

Brian.
