I did try a method similar to that which you describe but the I chickened out due to the difficulty of getting the rudder out. Seeing how difficult it was, due to the tightness of the shaft in the bearing, I dont think it would have bee feasible to do it afloat.

Of course 4 metres of tide and a muddy bottom complicates the issue also.
