Subject: Advice on Sails for Pandora 725

Author:
Lindsay
[Edit]

Date Posted: Saturday, August 09, 07:01:12pm

I have recently purchased Pandora 725, the boat the Colcloughs spoke of in their Random Racing Thoughts article which appears on the main web site. I have her at Oulton Broad on the East Coast which is close to the old Rydgeway site (soon to be converted into flats, I believe!). She is now known as Mary P and has been in this area for a while. She was in generally good order structurally (no osmosis!) with less than adequate sails and poor running gear. I've sorted out most of the latter and am now turning my attention to the sails.

I'm in the market for new or good second hand sails and would appreciate some general advice on the following points:

Good sailmakers for the class – I note the comment about North Sails and wonder whether it still applies.

Typical prices for new and second hand sails.

Any offers of good new or second hand sails.

At present she is not fitted with foresail reefing though it's something I'm thinking about.

My own background is that I'm returning to sailing after a break and my prior experience is mainly with dinghies and dayboats in coastal waters. While I don't expect to race Mary P, I still find myself striving for performance especially when there's another boat in sight so, as they say, never say never. For the rest of this year, I'll settle for the Broads while I get myself and Mary P sorted. After that I expect to spend some time in the area of Jack Coote's classic East Coast Rivers. If I can find anyone silly enough to sail with me then there will be two of us otherwise it will be single-handed.

Thank you for any advice and guidance you'd care to pass on or for any stories about my new companion.

Thank you

Lindsay

Hi all,

I just bought a Pandora, which may be the easternmost boat yet presented on this forum. It´s (probably, haven´t had the sails out yet) hull Nr. 519 Pandora International, brought from Switzerland, from lake Zurich and her new home is in the Czech Republic, not far from Prague.
But I would have a couple of questions, as the boat appears to be rather basic in the interior. There is no sign of the nice galley which I found on the brochure pictures on your site. Does anyone have a drawing, so that I could try to make one like that myself? Also, there is the moulded sink, but no water pump or anything. Do you know, which (preferably manual) waterpump could fit in there?

Thanks a lot for your help and patience, as I am probably going to ask some more idiotic questions in the future.

Cheers

Pavel

I am the proud owner of Scallywag, a Pandora International P684 and have been restoring her to former glory over the past months. I launched her recently and have had some decent sails in her. The boat came with a number of headsails when I first bought her, but these do not seem to be originals could anybody advise on the dimensions of the Luff Leech and foot of the original sails for this type of boat so that i can set about replacing them.

Hello everybody,

Would anyone knows in what year could a Rydegway Pandora International with sn 525 be build ? This boat if for sale and seller tells me the boat is from 1985.He says that because this is the date that is printed on the immatriculation certificate of the boat. (=boat licence)but I presumme this does not coincide with the year of building of the boat.

Thanks for any info

Something strange going on with the site here, as I see that the last two messages that I posted have been reposted some considerable time later dated as June 6th?
Anyway, Tony, that accounts for the discrepancy in the no of times I used the sails as per my direct E-Mail to you, and Tim, I did go ahead and get the #1 genoa modified for use with a Plastimo 608s and it's costing me €250. But it needed to be reduced in size because the roller mechanism needs the foot of the sail to be at least a foot higher off the deck...which is actually better because although I lose sail area, previously the sail foot had to bend up over the pulpit rail, and would never set right unless I was close hauled and could have it inside the rail completely. It was always catching on the rail when I tacked! Roll on roller reefing...getting the new sail this week.
Thanks for your answers and advice.

I am going to install roller reefing on my Pandora international, and was going to get one of the sails modified. My inquiries to date indicate that it would be cheaper to buy a new sail rather than have one modified.
So on offer are a #1 and #2 genoa, almost brand new, up three times I think.
I have no idea what to ask for them, but I have the receipt for the whole suit which was 3500.

Has anyone experienced problems with leaks associated with the cockpit drain in an international? ( no. 686) What I've noticed is that if I'm sailing alone, the exit of the cockpit drain is actually above the water, and there's no problem. However with a few people in the cockpit I've noticed that there is a small leak which appears to be coming from the pipe which joins the inlet and exit of the drain, so that a small amount of water ends up in the lockers. I'm presuming that this is because the extra weight is pushing the exit below the water line, but even with the anti-fouling scraped away, I can see no potential leak just where it passes through the hull.
The other possibility is that the pipe which joins the two is leaking, but this is in a really awkward position below the cockpit floor, so if there's a simpler solution......?

I have an original Trotter built by grimsby plastics. I have experienced a lot of problems getting her to turn through the wind, she starts to go but unless i'm moving at a great pace she doesn't quite make it. At first i thought it was to do with the non-standard swing keel that had been installed, but i've now replaced that yet she still doesn't like to turn through the wind. Any suggestions?

Hi, I'm an ex-owner of a Mk1 Pandora (1972) and may be in the market for another soon. I know that some boats (on the east coast) had a problem with over-tightened rigging causing the side decks to sag, ie. the cabin structure was pushing the side decks downwards. The solution was to install an "A" frame, or similar structure, under the mast step position which took the loads directly down to to the hull structure. I haven't seen this problem mentioned on any Pandora-related websites but perhaps I just haven't seen them all yet. Anyone else know about this?

Can anyone help me to sort out my masthead rigging? I unstepped the mast to have new shrouds and stays made up. When I came to fit the centre shrouds to the masthead, I could not remember how they fitted. Near the top of the mast are two elongated holes, one each side. I was advised that the shrouds pass through those holes, are joined by a shackle which then sits inside the mast, thus fixing the shrouds. It seemed right - there were marks at the bottom of the holes as if the shrouds had rubbed previously. But when I came to tension the centre shrouds, they were way too long! I cannot believe that the rigger made a mistake (?), so I think I have done something drastically wrong. Help please!

Hello,
we have recently acquired an early Mk1. The hull is in very good condition and the interior is virtually complete and original. It has a mast and boom but no rigging cables, we would like to restore this "Pandora" to her original condition and specifications. We know absolutely nothing about sailing craft as my main interest and usage is within the motor boat fraternity. Could anyone assist or help in relation to copy drawings photos etc of interior lay out/rigging,sail plans etc. Any help would be very much appreciated. Also could anyone advise as to where if any, the hull identification number would be located? So we can actually date its production more accurately, if anyone has heard of it it is called the "John E" and has not been renamed to our knowledge.
Many thanks in advance John and Keith.

p.s. could you also point us in the right direction so we may join the owners club and get sailing!!

Can anyone advise which currently-available jib sheet winches would fit our Pandora International? For instance, Harken B6 or B8 - although the B8 appears to have too large a diameter for the space available. Are there other makes that would suffice? We need to replace the original Barton winches (that have the handle underneath!) with winches adequate for this OAP to handle a large genoa singlehanded.

As you all might have guessed I'm about to launch for this season, so here's another question. Is it feasible to trailer the boat with the mast folded back, pin in place, and resting on a crosstree in the push pit. It would be supported 13 feet from the heel. I'm worried about stress on the mast during transport....roads are not great round here and it's a 35 mile journey.

Hi all
I am new to sailing, so please forgive my ignorance. I have a Pandora International (Pilgrim's Lady) moored at Loe Beach, near Truro in Cornwall. I have unstepped the mast, with the intention of checking and maybe replacing the rigging and the navigation lights and cables. I have checked the collregs and I am now confused about the necessary navigation lights! Am I right in thinking that I can have a three-colour light atop the mast for sailing, and an all-round white light for anchoring, and that I need no other lights? At the moment, there is a three-colour on top of the mast, a white light on the pushpit, a white light on the transom, and another white light about two-thirds of the way up the mast. If I only need an all-round white for anchoring, can I fit it above or near the tricolour? Help!
Also, I want to replace the cables and have tried to pull the existing cables throught the mast, with a mouse lead attached, but they won't budge. Any ideas why?

Hi all
I've been beavering away at my new toy, an International, and quite by accident discovered that the gap between the cockpit deck and the underside moulding has been home to gallons (or the metric equivalent) of water, which has found its way in by various routes over the years. I drilled three smallish holes in the moulding below the companionway step, right at the point where it curves under the storage area. Water poured out and nearly filled the storage well! I have left the holes so that any other water can find an exit, since it is fairly easy to clear the water out of the storage well with a bailer. You might want to try this to see if you've been inadvertently carrying water inboard.

I`ve read several postings on here about trailers for the Pandora range. Well i can`t say about fin/drop keels, but if you own a bilge keel version (properly known as twin fin), there is a very easy, and often much cheaper, solution. When i bought my International in 91 she had a heavy duty 4 wheel trailer with 2 wide troughs for the keels to sit in. It took me a little while to realise that it was in fact a modified CAR trailer. Unfortunately i left the boat in a boatyard for quite a few years without launching due to lack of funds, and in that time i did`nt see her for a couple of years. As a result the trailer just rotted a bit too much, so i`m now looking at the modified car trailer option myself. You can pick up a good condition used car trailer (heavy duty) a lot cheaper than a purpose made boat one. All you have to do is to cut down the wheel troughs to the desired length. My trailor also had 3 scaffold clamps, 1 behind the jockey wheel and 1 either side at the front of the keel troughs which were location points for 3 galvanised scaffold poles to align the boat with strategicaly placed marks when the trailor was under water. It made retreaval so much easier and quicker. I hope this may be of benefit to some owners. Happy sailing........ Neil.

Hi everyone.

I have posted a couple of messages here on this forum which I found the other day, but I feel that its time to come clean with you all. Although I do in fact own a Pandora ( A 700 no684 ) I also own and run Abersoch Boatyard Services Ltd, funnily enough based in Abersoch N Wales.

My yard looks after a good number of the North Wales fleet, preparing them for the water and carrying out jobs for owners and advising them over the winter months.

As much as I enjoy prodding boats my main passion is sailing them, (so if you want to sail lots NEVER buy a boatyard!!) and 2007 will see No 684 back on the water for the first time in a good few years.

Having probably the largest fleet in the country I would like to set up a register, to run alongside the Owners Association, of all the Pandoras that are still around.

This will not cost anyone any money and I am prepared to donate as much time to this as needed, and I hope it will become as lively as the Pandora Week dinners have been over the past years, ( so I'm told!!), and perhaps it will encourage more people to come and join in the fun that is Welsh open week.

Any thoughts on this would be most welcome.

All the best

Tim

I am excited to start sailing it considering what has looked like a pretty good reputation. I am trying to clean up the title. No hull number was found by the two prior owners so it has been given a new serial number. I would like to get its hull number on the title it I can find it. If anyone out there has one of these real old Van de Stadt built boats and can tell me where I can find the hull number, I would appreciate it. Also, if you have discovered any particular weak areas (especially considering the 40 yr age!) that you could share with me or any meaningful upgrades you have been able to make. This was a pretty stripped down model ... no frills. Thanks and good sailing!

I sail a 1971 Splinter, a 21 footer designed by Van de Stadt and very similar to a Pandora. I'm trying to find some info and wondered if anyone could help.

1. Does anyone have a PYS rating for a Splinter
2. Does anyone have a copy of the original owners manual - I know there was one.
3. Is there any kind of owners group or even a fleet that regularly races these now

Any help appreciated; I can't find anything at on on the net.

Considering buying a mk 1 available here, in very poor condition, but reckon i can cope with refurbishment.
cant find tops of keel bolts? hull seems flexible at turn of bilge to keel if I rock it when dried out. no sign of cracking or movement at transverse floor /hull joins. is this a problem?

I want to replace the old 5HP 2stoke Yamaha with a suitable new 4 stroke but am having some difficulty in finding one which will fit into the 480mm dia aft locker.Actually dropping through the hole is tricky but this can be acheived. Then however there is insufficient room for it to tip flat so the cover can be replaced. I would prefer to maintain the 5HP but may need to compromise on power to find one to fit. Any advice would be gratefully received. I prefer to avoid fitting an exterior outboard bracket as this would interfere with tiller.
