Hi Stuart, The size of engine depends very much on where you are going to sail. If you are sailing on Lakes or inland, then a 4hp may be adequate, but if you are sailing on tidal rivers or coastal, then in no way should you ever consider anything less than 8hp. One of the last of the old 2 strokes (still legal if you are a comercial fisherman?), would be a good engine as they are much smaller and also lighter than a 4 stoke, and lighter than older 2 strokes, and they will fit the stbd locker. The same goes for a 10hp, which were more often than not, based on the same engines as the 8hp. Regards............... Neil.
