Have you checked out Classic Marine? I eventually came across this - for brass hatch fasteners see page

Do any of these look like those you mention from Pirate's Cave? I could not get an image of these and confess that as an east coast Scot spending £28 / £56 sight unseen proved more than my canny gene would allow, despite your recommendation. I think I shall try the heavy duty wing nut version at around £11 each.
I'll keep you posted on how I get on.
