I have recently purchased Pandora 725, the boat the Colcloughs spoke of in their Random Racing Thoughts article which appears on the main web site. I have her at Oulton Broad on the East Coast which is close to the old Rydgeway site (soon to be converted into flats, I believe!). She is now known as Mary P and has been in this area for a while. She was in generally good order structurally (no osmosis!) with less than adequate sails and poor running gear. I've sorted out most of the latter and am now turning my attention to the sails.
I'm in the market for new or good second hand sails and would appreciate some general advice on the following points:
Good sailmakers for the class – I note the comment about North Sails and wonder whether it still applies.
Typical prices for new and second hand sails.
Any offers of good new or second hand sails.
At present she is not fitted with foresail reefing though it's something I'm thinking about.
My own background is that I'm returning to sailing after a break and my prior experience is mainly with dinghies and dayboats in coastal waters. While I don't expect to race Mary P, I still find myself striving for performance especially when there's another boat in sight so, as they say, never say never. For the rest of this year, I'll settle for the Broads while I get myself and Mary P sorted. After that I expect to spend some time in the area of Jack Coote's classic East Coast Rivers. If I can find anyone silly enough to sail with me then there will be two of us otherwise it will be single-handed.
Thank you for any advice and guidance you'd care to pass on or for any stories about my new companion.
