Subject: uterin fibroid

I'm 45 year old and was recently sent for a pelvic ultrasound. Well what I was told is that I have fibroid in my uteris the size of a grapefruit. This information coming from the technician. My doctor has not received the results of this ultrasound as yet, but I should be hearing from her this week. My concern here is, I've been researching the web and most suggest that my only option is surgery, and a possible histerectomy. This scares the heck out of me.
Is there anyone out there who has gone thru what I'm about to go thru, which at this point is not written in stone, but I'm scared, scared of what I saw on the screen and scared of what might have to happen. Is this fear normal. Is is a no big thing to have a historectomy? I need some support here,as I don't know what to expect.
