Subject: Cool Springs Cemetery

The evening of Friday, September 7 found 1st Sgt. Ben Hatch, Sgt. Tom Bennett, Miss Penny and myself camped on the front lawn of the Depot Museum in Henderson, Texas. Saturday morning we toured the museum, struck camp.

The drive to New Salem was a short one, and the folks at the Washburn Community center had prepared a wonderful lunch. At 2:30 we joined the caravan to Cool Springs cemetery, where we met with new members Ronnie Little, Matt Rushing, and Lonnie Palmer.

Cool Springs cemetery is a textbook example of how a cemetery should be kept, and of how one should be restored. A couple of years ago a tornado had come through and plumb wrecked the placed, scattering headstones and fallen pine trees all over the grounds. All of the destruction was cleaned and repaired.

The ceremony was beautiful as well. The New Salem Invincibles choreographed and executed this one beautifully. After the vollies were fired, a canteen service was performed. The Grays ceremony was reserved for near the last, as per our request. The rest of the riflemen there joined us in this ceremony. Sgt. Bennett placed the musket in the ground by the bayonet in a central location in the cemetery, and started the ceremony off. It was ended with a prayer and the reforming of ranks, and 1st Sgt. Hatch led the men off the field.

This was definitely one of the finest ceremonies the Grays have had the Honor and Pleasure to attend. I thank you all who came out and braved the drive and the heat to get there!

Some events are coming up:

On Saturday, September 22nd we will have a booth set up at Ovilla, Texas during their heritage festival.

October 13th, Dallas Heritage Village for Harvest 1861.

October 20th, Osceola, Texas. We will set and dedicate a Confederate headstone for Pvt. David Matthews of Co. H, 26th Mississippi Infantry. Commander James and Ms. Becky Plummer of the William H. Murray Bivouac, Order of Confederate Gray will in attendance from Baltimore, Maryland.

October 27th, Corsicana, Navarro Rifles marker dedication.

November 3rd in McKinney, we will be with Co. I, 4th Texas Infantry at the Celtic Heritage Festival and will have our booth set up.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

YOS,

Preston Furlow
