Subject: Mike Gunter Service

It's hard to put into words the feelings and emotions I felt at the chapel service and the graveside service for Mike. Watching the pain and suffering of the family and friends was gut-wrentching. The grief that was felt by them, us was overwhelming. I have to thank David and Johnathan for the fortitude of standing guard at the casket for an hour while the friends filed by paying their last respects to their friend, our friend. At the grave-side service, everything went as planned...no, it went batter than planned. It seemed like slow-motion at times. Each man in the honor guard had the same thoughts and actions as if we had done this a hundred times. When actually it was our first one. The difference between doing a memorial service for a veteran and doing the service for a fallen pard...tent-mate...mess-mate...friend...was surreal. This was a man who had been one of us. He had been our friend. It was only fitting a proper that we honor his life and his friendship while he was with us. It was only fitting and proper that we pay our respects to him and his family in the way they wanted it. We were asked to do what we did by the family and we did it for them and for Mike. I know he was watching and was pleased with what he saw. I only ask that now in the days and months to follow, that we as re-enactors and "family" cherish each day and live it to its fullest, because we never know when our time will come. I ask that we all remeber Mellisa and her family in our daily prayers and ask that God comfort them in this time of grief and that they will come to a point in their life that they are able to cope with each day, but never forget.
Thank you guys for the Honor Guard and the grave-side service. It couldn't have been better and the fellowship we shared will only get better each time we are called upon to perform another one.
