My sharpei had a lot of skin problem since he was a puppy, I spent lots of money for his medications. I brought him to different vets and dermatologist. The problems went for a while and came back as soon as the seasons change. I've done so many things, tried to change his diets, shampoos, etc. Everytime we went to see the vets, they just gave him steroid shoot, which worked for several months. The steroid is actually a bad idea to treat this kind of problem. I learnt later on, that the steroid make the problem gone for a while but then it come back worse than before. He smells soo bad, red itchy skin (hot spot), lots of hair loss(bald spot) all over his body. This been going on for almost 6 years. Then, I found on the internet about skin problem in shar pei (the natural treatment). They recommend to use anti dandruf/dry flaky hair shampoo over the counter (I use head & shoulder, or sometimes any kind grocery brand name for special anti dandruf/dry scalp shampoo-inexpensive)
it works great! They also recommend to give your dog vitamin that contains OMEGA3, later on I found the best solutions ever that works like a magic: VITACAPS from drs.smith&foster. I also changed his food to science diet for sensitive skin. His skin problem gone since then.
One more thing, dont bath sharpei more than twice a month at least since shar pei has a very dry sensitive skin. I bath my shar pei just once a month, it works fine, he's not smelly anymore....;)
Hopes this will work for your shar pei as well. Good Luck!
