Subject: ALERT - Alcohol & Drug Use increases your chance of overdose

The NTA has produced a Research Briefing examining the question: “Does the combined use of heroin or methadone and other substances increase the risk of overdose?”

The researchers examine 15,000 toxicology reports from1991 – 2004 from Coroners across England for deaths caused by heroin or methadone. 1,586 and 553 cases (respectively) were identified and these were examined for the presence of other substances.

In summary the findings are that blood alcohol levels above the legal driving limit (80mg/100ml) appear to have the effect of reducing the threshold at which (an otherwise) ‘normal’ amount of heroin becomes lethally dangerous. Where alcohol in the blood above the driving limit was detected, the heroin blood level was 20% to 50% lower than in cases where the alcohol level was lower or absent.

The report also refers to finding in relation to benzodiazepines and methadone, but alcohol use will have implications for policy and harm reductions messages.
