done this myself and survived but I don't know how dangerous it is. Tramadol is like a synthetic codeine so he'd have to snort a lot to get the same sort of high as smack. I once took 100 * 30mg orally and wasn't at all high, in fact, I was very sick for a couple of days. At least codeine is natural. If you are feeling sick from opiate withdrawel then look up cold water extraction of codeine from co-codamol etc.
