I read the book - just saw the movie. My friend (who read the book too) says that she thinks that Paul assaulted Lola previously and was covering up for him with the "twins attacked me" with her story to Briony in Briony's bedroom about the bruises on her arms. I completely missed this if this was the case.

From the movie's interpretation - Lola was a willing participant in the scene outside but needed a story to cover up what was happening after she was discovered by Briony and was only too happy that Briony came to her own conclusions. I think they made it more evident in the movie, I wasn't so sure in the book and thought she ended up marrying her attacker without her knowledge.

What do you think about the "twins tortured me" story?
