Lola is using her sexuality to attract Marshall, and in doing so will endure some physical abuse as payment... he wants to ravish young girls. (There is some mention of a dream of his sisters striping him of his clothes, and in later passage, Briony mentiones that Marshall and Lola keep the courts busy in protecting his reputation...further debauchery afoot?) Emily warns the dinner guests that when England heats up in the summer that sexuality is unloosed and loose morals become commonplace. Lola becomes stronger than Marshall only by out-living him. I think love is immaterial to Lola, she knows what kind of a monster Marshall is. Above all, his money and power have enabled her to live a life of luxury.
