I agree with Helen in that this entire story is really about Briony feeling better about herself. At first I was sympathetic b/c she was a child but as I approached the ending I realize that the entire story was self-serving. Briony was trying to "make it right" by telling the version that she felt appropriate. If she was looking for atonement the best thing to have done would be to admit that due to her wrong doing two people that loved each other were never able to be. That she would've ginven anything to make it right yet was not able to...instead she scapegoats on giving them a happy ending to make herself feel better. I wish she had made herself somewhat accountable and given Robbie and Cecilia their dignity if not in death...
