I agree, I'd naturally assumed from a few instances in the novel that Florence had been abused. I was only lightly shaken because no-one else I'd spoken to had noticed. This had puzzled me, as it read so core to the book I read. It's almost too subtle for the reader who has no experience of a similar nature to instinctively empathise and realise. I found the beauty of the book this triple tragedy of Florence's abuse; her inability to connect this to her fears; and the travesty of the two not being able to dialogue.
