I was an italian reader of ian nc ewan. i said i was because i am disgusted by his closeness to our mayor of rome, waltere veltroni, who is transorming our city in a garden of cement. of course when mc ewan comes here takes a stroll with the mayor in the main spots of the historical centre, but they don't dare to walk in the suburbs, where mr. veltroni is preparins a wasteland of big shopping malls and houses for rich people. The mayor of rome is depicted as a good man, someone really really careful. the reality is different. i suggest everyone to take a walk in the roman suburbs, where people suffer for traffic and evictions. thanks to non-critic people like mc ewan, politicians like veltroni have an easy life, protected from any critic and celebrated without any good reason. lietrature should something else than a way to climb the social ladder and strike a pose close to the a deaf power.
next monday we are demonstrating against the new city planning, 70 million of cube metres without any real help for poor people without a house and a devastation for the environment. of course you won't find any of this in mc'ewan' pages or in the mainstream newspapers, because the builders control the media down here in rome.
