I entirely agree with your theory; there are a number of hints about this, on pages 50, 105, 115 and 153 as well as page 99. This seemed to me to be an important theme as it explains Florence's reaction at a much more elemental level than that of simple ignorance or inexperience, and underlines how tragically this event will affect the rest of her life. The fact that it is implicit and not developed makes it, in my view, all the more powerful.
