"Self-absorbed"? Really? I think Henry is highly conscious, but not particularly self-absorbed. For me, the most touching moment in the novel is when he re-assures Daisy that he is not offended by her choice to dedicate her book to Grammaticus. He has some very benevolent qualities. How many "self-absorbed" men ask their wives, "How do you feel?" as he does when he returns, exhausted after his long surgery on Baxter. He's not overly self revolved, in my view. He reminds me of Leopold Bloom in Ulysses -- a kind of hero in his time.
