I thought that possibly McEwan is infering some kind iof sexual association between Florence and her father. I had to read the paragraph three times to watch for any hidden meanings. I am glad to read your comments to find that other readers thought so as well.

Yet as I am of Florence's age I quite understand those feelings of guilt and correctness connected to sex. In many famfilies it was a taboo subject and "good" girls did not speak about sex nor was the word mentioned.

Could it be that there was no sexual abuse but that all what Florence knew about men's behaviour was what she gathered from her trips with her father?
