once i was just as clueless as you are when it came to putting an an infront of h. however oneday the teacher explained to me that there are many people that would argue that h should be treated like a vowl - that it mostly english teachers and writers, therefore you would usually see it treated like a vowl. an everyday example is "i'll be there in an hour" we say it everyday oblivious of the an instead a, which would make it sound totally bizarre.
