I read this book for my book club and when I mentioned during our discussions that it was clear to me that Florrie's frigidity arose as a result of the sexual abuse she suffered, the majority of the other readers had no idea what I was talking about. Not only that, several of them were reluctant to accept that Florrie had been abused by her father and suggested that I had over-analysed the book. When I read one of the relevant passages that I felt pointed to the abuse (the scene where the young Florrie is on the ship with her father) one of the book-club members suggested Florrie was simply remembering how she suffered from sea-sickness.
I wonder why so many readers don't "get it". Is it because of a reluctance to confront what is still a fairly taboo subject?
