Phew...I thought I was the only person who picked up on the ''abuse''aspect of this book. What a relief. I recently wrote a review of the book and I wrote something similar to the following.
Very early on in this novel, I noticed subtle references to a possible incidents of sexual abuse/traumas involving Florence...by her father. I found at least 5 references to the possibility of this throughout the book, some more obvious than others.
The fact that the novel is set in a decade when sex and all related topics were a taboo subject for the majority, seems to distract the reader, kind of throw them off the scent of an abuse link. If this is deliberate by the author, then it is cleverly done, but it is there for those who interpret it as such and pick up on it.Sexual abuse was probably more taboo then as a discussion topic than the actual act of sexual relations.
I was starting to think that I was the only ''person'' who picked up on this. I am quite relieved.
