McEwan has since talked about this in the dvd to accompany On Chesil Beach. He says that he had considered including something to make the abuse quite clear. When we are told that because Edward didn't read the arts sections of the better newspapers (don't think he uses quite that term, but something like it), he wasn't aware of Florence's quartet's triumph at the Wigmore Hall, we were also to be told that neither had he seen that her father was gaoled for the abduction and abuse of a thirteen-year-old girl but he decided not to include it because he felt that would be too heavy handed. I think he was right, and yes, we did get it!
