When Robbie and Cecilia had that brief meeting it is described as awkward, and I wouldn't consider that fulling their love for each other. To me it seems this meeting between Robbie and Cecilia actually did happen and that Briony knows of it through Nettle. If you recall at the end Briony is donating several letters from a Mr. Nettle, I believe this the the same corporal Nettle with Robbie in France. Perhaps once Robbie passed, Nettle attempted to contact Cecilia, yet she died a few months after Robbie and this is how Nettle and Briony's path came to cross. I don't think it if so far fetched to believe this, but this is just my opinion!
