It seems to me that the novel contadicts itself, but that contradiction is the very point of the novel. In so far as brioney is atoned by her creation of an alternate ending, she remains guilty of falsehood. The question here is if her fertile imagination,(which makes her a good story-teller)is responsible for such injustice and suffering, can it then be used to rectify her wrong-doing, or is she simply continuing in a self serving denial. Is there, or isnt there atonment?
