I tend to agree with You. by creating an alternate ending, Briony tries to atone but ultimatly reveals that her ethical reason remains the same. She fictionalizes. And she justifies. I think that the novel is in a way mcewans attempt at atonement for himself as story-teller. There is always a little guilt involved when one plays God, Ie, creates, as all writers do. I guess its the question that remains. Has there been atonement?
