Yes, I did think something had happened, and surely the author wanted readers to ponder this, without making it certain.

The most obvious truth though was that Florence wasn't remotely physically attracted to her poor fiance/husband. How many women that must have happened to! Marrying for security and to get away from home, yet always dreading the marital bed.
