I am writing to express my sincere admiration for the complete excellence of Ian McEwan's writing. I have just finished "Saturday" and words cannot do justice to express exactly how terrific the experience of reading it was. I have read all your novels and at the end of each one felt as if I had been on a literary journey of such original and intricate richness, but "Saturday" leaves me especially touched. It is so expertly crafted, the time structure exhilarating, themes and facts as always thought-provoking but here even more brilliantly so. An all-absorbing story......
I am astounded that this website consists of mainly moaning A level students (albeit understandably so from the point of view of being forced to read a novel not necessarily of one's own choice(I admit to ceremonious burning of "Middlemarch" after A level English Lit - loving a novel is a very personal matter) but perhaps it shows a lack of good teaching of the subject - and of grammar!)and even more astounded to find so few references to "Saturday", apart from a couple of enquiries about Henry Perowne's fish soup. Ian McEwan's work is without question of serious academic worthiness, but should it not be confined to degree level contemporary fiction study?
Awaiting the next novel with great anticipation....
Mr McEwan, you are a literary genius.
