SATURDAY was my 1st McEwan novel. I have read many readers' reviews and agree with the general concensus that Henry lived in a middle class bubble. With the sad exception of his mother's degenerative brain disease [that he could not fix], he lived a very comfortable life on all fronts. He "lived" in his head by intellectualizing/analyzing the events and roles in his life. There is a security in not feeling our thoughts. When he did have a strong feeling, he maintained a stiff upper lip. I noticed a pattern and I would be interested if others saw it or in retrospect agree w/ me. My pattern is this: when H.P. is in his "analyzing" mode, McEwan uses his last name--Perowne; when H.P. is in a "feeling" mode, Henry is used in the text.
When he sees his mom, "Henry" is the name used in the visit. I saw more "Henrys" as the plot progressed to the 2nd Baxter meeting. I think/feel McEwan wanted HP to find a new role in his life--> fellow human to fellow human and thus find his full humanity which has both thinking AND feeling components.
Please give me your opinions!! Sue
