I believe that you would find the title to be rather ambiguous in its meaning and even somewhat rhetorical. Briony seems so wrapped up in her "little worlds that she creates" that in her own distorted view of the world this is probably the only way that she could possibly atone for her actions! Funny how the person she originally tried to help actually outlives them all and leaves one wondering if she knew who her attacker was from the start. This could have been her aim all along and basically suck the life from her attacker for retribution; she may even have told him!
