It depends on how you interpret the ending. For me the ending is Jed's letter to Joe in appendix 2, what is the significance of Jed having the last word in the novel?

There is a longing there from Jed, an unknown of if or when he may come out of the mental institution to which he has been confined, i see a sequel in the mist.

His persistance and "endurance" of Joe's resistance to his "love", seems sad but dangerous. As his obsession deepens while he is away from Joe.

Jed's unpredictability makes him the ideal narrator to end the novel with. As the collection of epistolories mount up throughout the novel, Jed's letters especially this last one is the most piognant part of the novel.

Also Jed's confinment adds to the animal imagery through unpredictability waiting to be set free.

So remember Joe....Jed's house is waiting for you!
