The reviews gathered by amazon.com were quite favorable. They all discuss the thread of childhood and innocence lost.
Parts of this book were absolute genius, like the 'nightmare-in-slow-motion' description of Kate's disappearance. The author is a brilliant descriptive writer and a keen student of the human ego; but I felt I should read the book again. The plot construction is weak and although the fluid time references contribute to illustrating the internal battles the protagonist (Stephen Lewis) is fighting, they leave the reader a bit muddled (just like real people.)
Those who have been through a prolonged grieving progression speak of ‘resolving their issues’ or ‘acknowledging their loss.’ The processes through which we battle remain cloudy and ambiguous.
Stephen Lewis’ development is no less confusing than the process itself. That was the disappointing part.
