Well, in my opinion you have to read to the end to be able to wholly appreciate the book. I loved it, it was the first McEwan's book I read and after that I wanted to read all he wrote (I'm in a halfway through:) )

I know it might be confusing, these often changes of time and perspective but try to be patient and more cautious. and also try to treat the book as psychological complex case. You can see the case of Stephen, his wife (this is interesting, as we don't really know her, do we?)and mysterious PM Charles. I don't know, for me it was a fascinating book, a very sad one, but also very discovering and fresh.
