I studied The Child In Time during my English Lit. A-Level a few years ago, and was initially quite distracted by the regular jumps back and forth through time. However, the sheer readability of Ian McEwan's style kept me interested - he has a knack of making the central character(s) really empathetic, even though they're often quite different from myself (ie, they're fairly middle class and are usually quite successful in their professions!). I love the mix of intellectualism/science and aestheticism/emotion in the novel. The ending actually made me cry - only Nabokov's Lolita has had the same effect on me.
