Child in Time was my first McEwan, and it's still my favourite. I read it in the '80s and re-read it about 3 years ago for a reading group, and it stood up really well. I found the opening sequence totally riveting, and the ongoing process of grieving and depression very plausible. The character who reverts to childhood is fascinating. I'm not so sure about the out-of-time elements, but I didn't find that they detracted from the overall fascination of th book.
