Subject: Search re-open, UMASS Medical School, Director, Office of Technology Management

We are McCooe & Associates, an Executive Search firm currently conducting two searches in Licensing/Intellectual Property.


First is a search that recently re-opened for an Executive Director, Office of Technology for the University of Massachusetts (http://www.umassmed.edu/research/admin/) - one of the fastest growing university medical and research enterprises. At the core of the University of Massachusetts, located in Worcester, are its educational and research programs at The Medical School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the Graduate School of Nursing. The School of Biomed has 827 full-time faculty members with 224 PhD students. The Medical School, founded in 1962, is one of 28 free-standing University-based academic health campuses in the U.S. Sponsored research funding has gone from $72M in 1997 to the current $150M.


This Executive Director will have overall responsibility to ensure that the technologies and inventions of the research efforts at the Medical School are managed and marketed appropriately to potential partners and licensees. The goal is to be among the top 5 academic licensing offices in the U.S. and to stay at the leading edge in technology licensing strategies and methods.



This Executive Director will also have responsibility for putting in place standard and novel industry-sponsored research collaborations to serve the needs of the Faculty. Personal qualities must include leadership, vision and flexibility.



The individual will have an advanced degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry e.g. Ph.D., M.D, combined with a Business or Law degree or substantial business experience. A minimum of 10 years experience in licensing, technology transfer, business development in the life sciences industry or academic setting is sought.




The second is a search for a leader to be the Director, Patents & Licensing for the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ – www.umdnj.edu)), a network of academic health centers that includes eight schools on five campuses, enrolling more than 4,500 students in 38 degree and certificate programs. UMDNJ is ranked among the 100 top research universities in the country. The core located in Camden, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Newark, Scotch Plains and Stratford, NJ, are its eight schools: UMDNJ’s NJ Medical School, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, School of Osteopathic Medicine, NJ Dental School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of health Related Professions, School of Nursing and School of Public Health. The University was founded in 1970 by an act of the State Legislature as the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; granted university status in 1981. The University has more than 2,075 faculty members and more than 200 education and healthcare affiliates throughout New Jersey. Sponsored research funding has gone from $139.3M in 2002 to $152.5M in 2003.


This Director will have overall responsibility to ensure that the technologies and inventions of the research efforts at the Schools are managed and marketed appropriately to potential partners and licensees. The goal is to enhance licensing and partnering opportunities and to stay at the leading edge in technology licensing strategies and methods.



This Director, reporting to the Vice President, Legal Management, will also have responsibility for putting in place standard and novel industry-sponsored research collaborations to serve the needs of the Faculty. Personal qualities must include leadership, vision and flexibility.



The individual will have an advanced degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry e.g. Ph.D., M.D, combined with a Business or Law degree and substantial business experience. A minimum of 10 years experience in licensing, technology transfer, business development in the life sciences, industry or academic setting is sought.
