everything in Paul's letters (the earliest accounts of church life) show just how controlling the church was from the beginning. That is precisely why Noel spent more time talking about Paul than about Jesus. Jesus never seemed to say anything that implied members would be tied together with life-long covenants, tied down geographically, or damned if they left.
