I see what you mean. Maybe what I admire is his strategy rather than his morality.

Lizzie Donovan did a stint before him and I thought having a woman was a cracking bit of PR for a group being criticised for being down on women, but she didn't survive long. I am not sure Noel approved.

Before her was Dave Hawker, who I knew for some time after he left. He had been the front line defence when I published my leaflet (written jointly with John Everett) but he got himself into hot water with Noel because he thought the tactic of refusing to meet with us at the Evangelical Alliance to answer our concerns and to make it possible to avoid expulsion (through not appearing exclusive and unreasonable) was suicidal, as so it proved.

The row between Dave and Noel that followed the EA expulsion (let nobody kid you that the fellowship chose to leave at that time - they were definitely forced out) led to Dave being demoted, sacked from his PR role, shunned and ultimately to him leaving.

And when he did, he got in touch and invited me over for the weekend and we talked it all out.

It was funny talking to someone who had spent so much effort in trashing me to the press to discredit me. But I think it is quite easy to forgive someone once they are out for the things they did when they were members, because we all know how very hard it was to stand up to the leadership.
