I agree with you up to a point, nelly. It does seem weird.

However, while I think you are right that there is a sense in which behaviour in the JA tends to infantilise, I think that is true whenever you get a group of people together in a confined space away from the real world and re-write the rules.

A classic case in point is teachers on a night out after an ofsted inspection....as I was a few nights ago. We behaved like children...."terribly unprofessional"...thank goodness no parents saw us.

It's the same when you get blokes together to go to a classic car rally, when we can barely contain the desire to give women along the way scores out of ten...."ay, ay, I don't fancy yours, Pete!"

I wouldn't want to desparage either your feelings or Barbara's about this, but if the victim of the incident sees the funny side of it, I do think it quite possible that it went off the way Aardvark says it did, particularly, as I said earlier in the thread, as I hadn't known this kind of thing to be used to discipline someone.
