Ultimately, yes, each of us is responsible for his or her own action, but it is far too easy for the JA to pass the buck on this one. The fact is that corporal punishment was a policy, and I knew of Elders doing it to children when single mothers wouldn't.

And what your argument diminishes is the pressure members were under to conform to kingdom values.

The fact is that when corporal punishment was approved of in community the church was still very much in the mould which got it expelled from the Evangelical Alliance.....where the rest of evangelicalism was deeply concerned about heavy shepherding, fear of lost salvation for "splitters" etc. The church back then was not one which tolerated dissent, and not one you left without feeling you were going to hell.
