I don't usually post here, but there is a little to add by way of further information to my comments reported in the newspaper article posted above.

The judge and jury heard the case for and against the accused, not about the Jesus Fellowship’s Child Protection Policy either in the 1990s or currently.

As a result, the judge’s comments appear to have been misdirected.

The Fellowship’s position is that the welfare of children is of paramount importance.

The Fellowship has a comprehensive Child Protection Policy (publicly available online here), which is based on a model policy from the Churches Child Protection Advisory Service. It has been discussed with police and Social Services.

Despite the judge’s comments, CRB checks are required for employees and volunteers working with children or vulnerable adults (where legally allowed). As part of the Policy, anyone on the Sex Offenders Register is not allowed to live in a community house where there are children.

The offences took place in the late 1990’s. CRB Disclosures only became available in 2002, and before that churches or youth groups had no access to information on past convictions. It is unclear how the judge came to be misadvised on this fundamental point. When CRB Disclosures were introduced, we adopted them as part of our procedure.
