Fair enough, Dave, but I was particularly struck by the fact that it was one of the "namby pamby" churches (Noel's phrase) that did help, when the JA wouldn't.
Barbara turned to her church, as you would expect, wouldn't you? The JA has charitable status and a high profile mission to street people, so it is only natural that people will assume that it will provide for needy people, but as John Campbell concedes on Wikipedia, the purpose of the street work etc is evangelism. Period.
What's more, it wasn't just a concession on John's part; he actually sees nothing wrong with preaching to people without meeting their corporal needs.
I think it is interesting when the churches the JA looks down upon as wishy washy etc are the ones actually meeting people's needs, while the JA turns people away if they will not conform or refuses to help when people are in desperate need, as this woman clearly was.
