As this is a place for discussing experiences maybe I'll chip in.

At no time did I ever feel suicidal when I lived in the community but equally, I have never felt so before or since I have left. Community is far from perfect in it's attempts to have structure and often people's specific needs are overlooked.

I agree with the post after this that there is a propensity for the JA to attract both the materialistically and mentally needy - after all, Jesus was kind of the same eh? The JA are not a magic bullet for everyone they meet and, unfortunately some will fall to their vices be that what it may. I have known several people who came to the JA as drug addicts - some remain clean and some have left and have since died. Sometimes the vice is too strong and the person to weak - it's not the JA that make it so.

Lets not use this thread in an attempt to make what is after all, the sad death of a troubled young woman, into something which those who knew her better or knew of her are acutely aware it was not. Jane was not hounded, berated or depressed by communal living into committing suicide.

I equally beg to differ on the JA's version of heaven being bleak - communal living can be as austere as you make it however it would be idiotic to suggest that sacrificial living on earth would be for no eternal reward. The lamb walking with the lion? Endless worship? No more pain? Sounds like a right chore ;)
