He was in the church already and already married with a child. He was an elder either before this incident or became one shortly after release from prison. He was definitely "in the lord" when it happened.
The girls family had been around for a long time and they left because of it.
My understanding was that it was not systematic longterm abuse but a single incident.
(not that that makes it okay)
