There was always a fair amount of cake in the JA, albeit mainly the ubiquitous flapjack, and I have said all along that it is not a kingdom shaped hole that I have in my heart, but a chocolate nut crunch shaped one. Choc nut crunch was for Goodness Foods customers, not for the Saints, but if any fell on the floor in the shop where I worked on Saturdays (John Gentle's shop at Weedon) we could eat it. We seemed to drop quite a lot :)

As for coffee, it wasn't allowed. It was a classic case of a fictitious rule being followed for years. There was nothing biblical in it....it wasn't about indulgence etc....I think it was about the price of it leading to the FDC taking it off the list for a while....Instead, the only alternative, apart from Tea, was Barleycup....which we called Barleymuck.

Sisters were known to drink Wilk.....a disgusting mix of hot water and milk.

When you had a cold, cider vinegar and honey was the fellowhip's recommended cure and I drank it for some years after I left.
