bad editing there...no connection between Rufus saying it was a prison for the mind and the church's ego.

The prison for the mind is self-explanatory, especially for anyone who was there. But the ego bit is about how the church really felt it was IT

so much so that to leave and go to another church didn't save you from the suggestion that you were in rebellion against God, backsliding into apostasy....because no other church was as good; every other church was "worldly", "wishy-washy", "the form without the power". Leaving the JA always meant a slippery slope to hell.

We always challenged the savedness of Christians we met....to try to undermine their claims that they were truly born again.

Simply, we were downright arrogant.

...and in many ways the JA still is. I have said it before, I know, but only three or so years ago an elder told me he couldn't believe that God would ever want anyone to leave the JA, so that anyone who did leave had to be doing so in order to choose a sinful life.
